English: 1940's style comic book sound effect ...

Image via Wikipedia

An onomatopoeia (whew! it may be fun to say, but spelling it right on the first try is a challenge!) is a word that imitates a sound, like buzz. Part of bringing writing to life is being able to tap into all five senses. Onomatopoeias give you a way to make the reader “hear” what’s going on.

I found this fun site through a tweet on twitter last week and thought I’d share.  It’s called Written Sound and it’s full of human, animal, and other sound effects to add to your writing. Enjoy!
