Writing Sparks: October 2014

October

Here’s a new batch of mix and match prompts to stir your creativity. Where will the muse take you this month?

QUERY SPARK

Welcome to April 2015 in the fast-forward, six-month-lead world of editorial! April is National Humor Month, so how about a pitch on how to host a stand-up comedy party, or a round-up of comedy clubs in the region? This is also the month for National Sibling Day (4/10/15). You might explore sibling celebrations, interesting(or overlooked) siblings of historical figures, or take a look at the psychological bonds between brothers and/or sisters.

STORY SPARK

Write a Creature Feature starring a giant squid like the one discussed in this TED talk.

CHARACTER SPARK

A character who has a list of things it will take to create his/her “happily ever after.”

SETTING SPARK

Three a.m. in a college dorm room.

PRODUCTIVITY SPARK

Write a manifesto as a way to focus on your goals and what you will do to become the writer you want to be. 99u.com posted a collection of five such manifestos that includes Leo Tolstoy’s Rules for Life that you can use as inspiration.

JUST FOR FUN

Write thought/speech balloons to capture the conversation between the two ravens in the picture at the top of this post.
