Writing Goals: Quarterly Check-In

April marks the end of the first quarter of the year. Time to re-examine those writing goals you made at the first of the year. What have you accomplished? Are you ready to tackle a new goal or goals?

My original goals for the new year included:

  • studying three new markets and pitching ideas to them
  • making time to generate new writing ideas each week
  • writing a book proposal for ideas I’ve already developed

Here’s where things stand for me. I’ve looked into 30 new markets for my work. I’m still developing queries on a weekly basis between pitching to my regular markets and writing for my on-going gigs, so I feel like I’m a little behind on that particular goal. The new ideas are coming along nicely. Since the beginning of the year I’ve generated 40 (!) new ones to explore. The book proposal goal has morphed into an e-book and I devote one day a week to working on that. With luck, it will be finished before the end of the year.

Where do things stand for you? Take a few minutes today and look over the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Decide if you need to make adjustments to reach them.

  1. I constantly make goals, I have lists of them everywhere I think I am gettign on with my goals but it never hurts to go back and double check!

    • Too true. I find it easy to make long lists of goals, then become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I want to accomplish. It’s much easier to choose a few and keep regular tabs on them until they are met.
