As a writer, you may have set specific goals for your writing career. Do you know how to reach them? Traveling a career path without a map can send you in circles — not the best way to advance to the next level.
You need what I like to call a GPS for writers.
G Is for Goals
This bit is easy. Where do you want your career to go? Do you want to write for national magazines? Pen a book?
P Is for Plan of Attack
Next up, consider how you will approach your goal. What are the steps between where you are and where you want to be? What are the milestones? What do you need to learn, research, do? If you’re just starting out, maybe the first step on your plan is learn publishing lingo. Second might be to research places that publish writing similar to what you want to tackle. Third: place a few short pieces of your work to garner published clips and so on… Map them out.
S Is for Set It in Motion
It’s all well and good to make a plan, but if you don’t follow it, you won’t move forward. Give each step your full attention, complete it, then move on to the next.
Keep your writing career moving forward, and don’t forget, when you meet your current goal, set a new one!
