It’s time to gear up for a weekend of writing again. Lately, I’m seeing a trend in the magazine world. The personal essay is making a comeback. Not only are magazines publishing more essays, they are hosting contests to seek them out. With that tidbit of information, it seemed only natural to have a weekend assignment focused on the essay. Not any essay, mind you, a contest essay.
This weekend, your mission is to write an essay for a contest. As luck would have it, The Writer is hosting one such contest right now. Click over and read the particulars. Before you start freaking out or complaining that you don’t enter contests, read these words: You do NOT have to enter. However, tailor your essay to match the guidelines and (here is the important part) write as if you intend to WIN whether you submit or not. Do your best work. Tug heartstrings, tickle funny bones, tell a tale.

In case you accept the assignment and want to go all the way, the deadline to enter is November 30, 2011 and the rules and guidelines are available here.
The Show and Tell Challenge
This week’s Show and Tell Challenge is a little different. If you plan to enter this contest using your essay from this assignment, drop a note in the comments and let me know so I can cheer you on. OR if you don’t plan to enter, but want to share your work with the readers of B&B, post it on your blog, then come back and share a link in the comments. It’s that simple!
