January is a time of new beginnings, right? So when I dreamed up this weekend’s writing assignment, it seemed like a good time to look at beginnings.
Most of the time, when I start a story or article, the place I begin writing is never the true beginning. It’s simply the dangling thread my muse chose to pull upon to see how much of the story I could unravel. The true openings always come later, after the initial wandering and muttering is done and I have some sort of crappy first draft in my hands. Then I can take the time to ponder.
Your assignment this weekend is to dig out something you wrote in the past and create a brand new beginning for it. It can be as small as an opening paragraph or as large as a whole new chapter. Or you might find a simple way to rearrange the opening you’ve already written that works better than your original. No matter how you choose to do it, make a fresh start.
If you decide to take the show and tell challenge, feel free to share the before and after versions of your openings.
