The first time I saw Tim Burton’s Big Fish, the movie struck a chord with me. I related to William’s quest to sort the man from the myth that was his father, because I too grew up with a man who was (and still is) a teller of tales. To this day, some of my father’s stories make me wonder how much embellishment happens naturally, and how much is merely a distortion of time on the memory. The man, the myth–somewhere the boundaries blur.
This weekend, your challenge is to write a story or essay about someone who is larger than life. Someone who has either created his own mythological existence, or had one crafted for him against his will. Take the time to explore the places where the boundaries get muddled and create a big fish tale of your own.
