Writing Sparks April 2013

The start of a new month means a new edition of writing sparks to inspire you to tackle new writing projects. What will you work on this month? New queries? New stories? Use these ideas as jumping off points.

Query Spark:  It may be April Fool’s Day, but smart writers know that many editors are already thinking ahead to October. And even though there’s no such thing as October Fool’s Day, it is a good time to work on pitches about haunted places, fall sports, and masks or costumes of all shapes and sizes.

Character Spark:  Write about an April fool.

Setting Spark:  In honor of National Library Week (U.S.) set your story within a library.

Story Spark:  Flocks of birds lined the rooftops, treetops, and electrical wires, brooding down at us. Where they all came from, we could not say. What they were doing here, we couldn’t imagine…
