Writing Sparks: September 2013

Welcome to another month of creativity! It’s time to wear the thinking caps and start generating a new batch of ideas. Are you ready? Mix and match these prompts and see where your muse takes you.

QUERY SPARK

The kids may have just headed back to school, but in the editorial world, it’s already time for Spring Break. If your target publication has a six-month lead, now is a good time to pitch articles about March beach vacations. If you’re a craft, food, or party kind of writer, keep in mind that Mardis Gras is March 4th next year.

STORY SPARK

The small octopus glared up from the dishpan. This was definitely not the best sight to wake up to.

CHARACTER SPARK

A young child impatient to open a gift.

SETTING SPARK

A spelling bee in a retirement home.

FUN SPARK

Create a soundtrack for your work. What songs best represent the mood of your writing? The location? The characters? Build a playlist, crank it up, and start writing!
